Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Short Essay
Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was an eminent social
reformer of modern India, a crusader of civic and legal rights of the Depressed
class, a well-known freedom fighter and a constitutional expert. He was born on
April 14, 1891 in Mahar caste, the then Hindu untouchable caste in Madhya
Pradesh. His father Ramji Mahoji Sakpal was a soldier in the Indian army.
Dr. Ambedkar cleared his matriculation from Bombay
(now Mumbai) in 1908 AD. He married Rambai in 1905 AD. After his secondary
education, he attained his Graduation degree in 1912 from Elphinstone College,
Bombay. He attained his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University. London
University decorated him with D.Sc. degree. His wife Rambai passed away in
1935. After her death, Dr. Ambedkar married Dr. Sharada Kabir of Bombay in
1948.
Dr. Ambedkar dedicated his entire life to the
upliftment of the Depressed class and weaker sections of society. He made
relentless efforts to eradicate miserable and poor conditions of lower castes
and a depressed class of the then society. He propagated his ideas of social
equality, upliftment of the untouchables and eradication of illiteracy in his
newspapers Mooknayaka and Bahishkrit Bharat. The main objective of his ‘Samaj
Samta Sangh’ was to eradicate the evil of untouchability from Hindu society. In
December 1927, he successfully led the ‘Mahad Satyagraha’ to ensure the civic
rights of untouchables of drawing water from public wells.
He also made hard efforts for separate electorate to
the Depressed Class and weaker sections of society. His efforts ultimately came
out in as the Poona Pact between Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Ambedkar. He also
effectively raised the voice for the Depressed Class in the three Round Table
Conferences as he took part in all the three Round Table conferences. In brief
he was a lifelong crusader of the Depressed Class. Dr. Ambedkar passed away on
December 6, 1956 in Delhi.
