Kandukuri Veeresalingam Short Essay in English
Kandukuri Veeresalingam, a prominent social reformer
and scholar, was born in a Brahmin family in Rajahmundary, Andhra Pradesh in
1848 AD. He lost his father Subbarayadu at an early age. After his education,
he joined a school as a teacher. Later he also became the headmaster of an
English medium school. Veeresalingam laid great emphasis on women’s education
and empowerment. He even launched a girls’ school in Dhavaleswaram in 1874 to
boost women's education. He propagated his ideas of social reforms and women
empowerment and denounced social evils like child marriage, caste system and
illiteracy in his Telugu journal which he launched in 1876 with the purpose of
social reform.
Kandukuri was immensely influenced by the Brahmo Samaj
in terms of ideology and principles. He was deeply inspired by the ideas of
Keshab Chandra Sen. He also tried to spread awareness for girls' education and
promote widow remarriage in the society through his magazine ‘Vivekavardhini
(knowledge Improver). He himself wrote many articles against superstitions,
corruption and women's oppression in many journals just to purge society of
social evils. He played a vital role in the foundation of ‘The Rajahmundry
Social Reform Association in 1878 with the main objective of overall upliftment
of women in the society. Under the Association, Kandukuri organized the first
widow remarriage in 1881.
Apart from being a top social reformer of his time, he
was a great scholar of Telugu, Sanskrit and English. He penned many novels,
essays, dramas in different languages. Satyavathi Charitham was his first novel
in Telugu. He was one of the founding members of the Indian National Congress
in 1885. He passed away in May 1919. Kandukuri also launched a magazine named
‘Satihitabodhini’ with an objective of social reform. ‘Rajasekhara Charitamu’
was another prominent literary work by Kandukuri Veeresalingam. It was based on
English novelist Oliver Goldsmith’s The Vicar of Wakefield’.
‘Vyavahara Dharmabodhini’, ‘Brahma Vivaham’,
‘Prahlada’, ‘ Satya Harischandra’, ‘Tiryag -Vidwan Mahasabha’ are some other
literary works by Kandukuri Veeresalingam.
He was also honored with the title of ‘Rao Bahadur’ in
1893 by the government for his relentless efforts for social reform and women’s
upliftment.
